How to be independent,
from big tech

Do you like bald people in labcoat laughing about making more money on your back ? Because: we don't.

Then you are at the right place !

Let's go on a journey of building your own cloud !

Why ?

Because:

  • It's cheaper
  • More secure and better privacy
  • You own your media
  • You have your own cloud, and that's something to brag about.
Wait, is this hacking?

Wow, wow ,wow... No, only linux iso...

Understanding your needs.

Before diving into the technical aspects of building a cloud server, it's crucial to assess your requirements.

Consider factors such as:

  • Types of Services: Determine what types of services you'll be hosting. This could include a "Netflix", a "Spotify", a "Google Cloud/Photos", etc.
  • Number of Users: How many users will be accessing the server? This will help you determine the hardware specifications needed for a optimal price point.
  • Budget: Establish a budget for your project, taking into account both hardware and software expenses.

With those settings in hand, you can choose between two option more easily than based on feelings

Hardware Requirements

The hardware requirements for a home server will depend on the scale of your project and the number of users.

Here's a basic rundown of the components you'll need:

  • Computer: You can repurpose an old computer or build a new one specifically for the server. Ensure it has sufficient processing power, RAM, and storage capacity.
  • Network Connectivity: A reliable network connection is essential for any cloud. Opt for a wired Ethernet connection for optimal performance, especially if you are hosting a streaming service with high definition content.

For a basic usage, we recommend a N100 processor based mini PC, at least 8GB of RAM and at least 50GB of storage. The storage depends on the number of users. For exemple, in a family of 5, 1To in SSD is plenty.

You can have a full setup for around 400$ new. But look for refurbished or the second hand market, there are some good deals ! Personally, I used my old desktop then got disks from dead laptops (2x1To HDD for backup of phones/photos and old movies, buyed: 1To ssd for my family).

Software

Choosing the right software is key to the functionality and usability of your home server.

Two options:

  • YunoHost: Is the software we recommend by really far. It's all in one. And noob freindly.
  • CasaOS, not noob-freindly. Difficulty +.
  • Manual: a bit radical but it works. Difficulty ++

For media server: search for servarr ;)

This website is hosted with ♥ on a YunoHost server btw.

Maintenance and Upkeep

Once your server is up and running, it's important to perform regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Here are some tasks to consider:

  • Backup Your Data: This is the most important one, implement a regular backup schedule to protect your media library against data loss. Follow the 3-2-1 rule.
  • Software Updates: Keep your server and applications up to date to patch security vulnerabilities and add new features. Easy, especially on Yunohost.
  • Monitor Storage Space: Regularly check the available storage space on your server and consider expanding it as your user data grows.

Consider this as null, especially if you use it regularly.

What is that 3-2-1 rule ?

The 3-2-1 rule, attributed to photographer Peter Krogh, follows these requirements:

  • 3 Copies of Data: Maintain three copies of data—the original, and at least two copies.
  • 2 Different Media: Use two different media types for storage.
  • 1 Copy Offsite: Keep one copy offsite to prevent the possibility of data loss due to a site-specific failure like a fire, water damage, or power surge.

Conclusion

Building a home server can be a rewarding project that provides convenient access to your own cloud and media from anywhere. By carefully selecting hardware components, and following best practices, you can create a reliable and versatile media server that enhances your cloud experience.
